Timoshenko, investigated for bribery
Ukrainian Prosecutor announced the opening of an investigation for corruption that would affect Yulia Tymoshenko, President Viktor Yanukovych’s former competitor, reported AFP.
The ex prime minister, now in opposition after the defeat suffered at the last presidential elections, was summoned to the Prosecutor’s Office this morning to receive a notice to that effect. Tymoshenko’s response was that the accusations were politically motivated.
Tymoshenko is suspected of “attempting to bribe the judges of the Supreme Court’,declared the Prosecutor’s Office spokesman.
This investigation was originally opened in 2004 and aimed events that had happened in 2003. The research was abandoned in 2005, although the investigation hadn’t completed, the spokesman said.
The investigation was initiated when Tymoshenko was in opposition. She allegedly tried to bribe judges by offering them 125,000 U.S. dollars to obtain the release from prison of some of her closest collaborators.
