Global warming leads to the disappearance of lizards

A fifth of the lizards on the planet could disappear by the end of the century. Reptile decline could cause an explosion in the number of insects, say U.S. researchers.

Almost 20% of the lizards of the planet could disappear by 2080 due to global warming, says a study by American researchers.

Research coordinator, Barry Sinervo, University of California, says that lizards lie in the sun to heat, but they need to retreat to the shadows to feed.

In recent years, however, in some areas of the globe,  the number of hours in the day that can accommodate the shade has dramatically decreased   and lizards could not adapt.

“If we start now to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, we are likely to decrease the rate of disappearance of 6% of all species of lizards,” says Professor Sinervo, quoted by The Daily Telegraph.

Lizards disappearance would impact on other species. “We could see the disappearance of species at the top of the food chain and the insect population explosion,” said Professor Sinervo.
