U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a comment on Twitter apparently warning former FBI Director James Comey against "leaking to the press", suggesting there might be "tapes" of their private conversations.
"I was going to fire Comey - my decision", Trump told NBC News' Lester Holt in an interview that aired Thursday.
The FBI and House and Senate Intelligence Committees are all conducting investigations into Russia's interference in the US presidential election, including possible collusion between Russian operatives and Trump campaign officials.
At the beginning, Trump's aides said Comey's firing came at the suggestion of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, but by Wednesday the word was that Trump had been considering firing Comey for a long time, and made the final determination after hearing from Sessions and Rosenstein. She also was deputy special counsel to the Senate special committee that investigated President Bill Clinton's Whitewater scandal.
Mr Trump said he had asked Mr Comey once over dinner and twice by telephone.
"I just want somebody that's competent". Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) declined, through representatives, to describe their conversations with Trump. "We took the information we had as best we have it and got it out to the American people as quickly as we could".
The president said he never pressured Comey into dropping the FBI investigation, and added that there was no "collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians". Trump told NBC he had planned to fire Comey all along, regardless of whether top Justice Department officials recommended the stunning step.

Trump released his own statement about Comey's firing: "You are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately", Trump wrote to Comey in a letter released by the White House.
