The SDF spokesman added that the U.S. decision had a "historic meaning" and demonstrated trust to the Kurdish forces fighting Daesh.
The YPG, however, is not classed as a terror group by the U.S. or the European Union and has been backed by Washington in its ongoing advance against the Islamic State terror group in Syria's Raqqa province, Efe news reported.
YPG spokesman Redur Xelil said the United States decision would "provide a strong impetus" to all forces fighting IS, but noted it came "somewhat late".
He spoke during a joint news conference with the visiting president of Sierra Leone.
