"I respectfully request that the legislature create a public health response contingency fund of $5 million to ensure sufficient resources are available for immediate, life-saving actions to protect Minnesotans from infectious disease outbreaks and other unanticipated public health threats", Ehlinger noted.
The state of Minnesota is dealing with its worst measles outbreak in almost 30 years.
But as the measles outbreak rages, the latest updates suggest a developing community pushback against misinformation.
The measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is given to children in two doses, typically the first dose is given to children 12 months old, with a second dose when they are between four to six years old. It is reported that over 90 percent of people in the Somali immigrant community were vaccinated against measles in 2008.
Last Thursday, when there were 41 measles cases, MDH released a statement, which said the majority of the cases have been spread by unvaccinated people, many of them from the Somali community.
The measles virus commonly travels through the air where it can live for up to two hours, making it more contagious than the flu.
While most cases are mild, measles can kill, and it often puts people into the hospital.
Of the 51 cases in Minnesota, at least 10 have resulted in hospitalization.

Ehlinger revealed that the department's funds were also stretched as it had to screen travelers and pregnant women for Zika virus.
This measles outbreak was stretching the funds of the Minnesota Department of Health and it needed $5 million to combat infectious diseases. Moreover, the resources of the local and state health departments are stretched.
