The only film selling tickets globally at even roughly the same pace as "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" was the South Indian sequel "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion". After 13 movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we've got used to the formula of having one mid-credits scene and then one post-credits sequence at the end.
As expected, Guardians 2 dominated the weekend box office at number one, dethroning The Rock's The Fate of the Furious, and is expected to $145 million domestically for its weekend release. The biggest film of 2017 so far, putting it at $487.6 million in North America - the 8th highest grossing film of all time (swimming past Finding Dory). It's off to a pretty good start, though. At least this weekend's box office would suggest so, with James Gunn's captivating sequel soaring above expectations with a breath-taking, hip-thrusting, expectation-defying $145 million domestic opening.
"The first thing I do in the morning is roll over in bed and check my phone for the morning box office reports". The movie accounted for 29 percent of the weekend's total ticket sales. "[These] big numbers represent quite a transition for Gunn", wrote Seth Kelley, "who, before signing on to direct the first Guardians, was mostly known as a B-movie director".
Well, it can't really be summertime until Marvel releases a box office behemoth for us to spend all our money on. It has been losing steam in its four-week run as well, pulling in just over $8.5 million this weekend. As for the domestic numbers Fate now ranks fourth in the series but is expected to leap frog Fast Five ($209 million) within the next two days and Fast & Furious 6 ($238 million) by the end of its theatrical run.
