Ossoff benefits from being the only serious Democrat candidate, while Republicans have seen infighting among their 11 candidates - including several with high-profile support and campaigns, including former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, state Sen.
President Donald Trump gave himself some credit for forcing a runoff in a special election in Georgia on Tuesday, saying he was "glad to be of help" after Democrat Jon Ossoff failed to win 50% of the vote.
Republicans, including the president, wanted to ensure Democrats wouldn't be able to use the election as a referendum on the Trump administration.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Wednesday painted the results in the special election to fill a U.S. House seat in Georgia, which the leading Democrat narrowly missed winning outright, as a "big loss" for the party. On the strength of a solid majority of the 55,000 in-person early votes cast in the race, Ossoff was running slightly ahead of the 46.8 percent Hillary Clinton won in the district last November (itself a large increase over Barack Obama's 37.5 percent). "His support will be critically important and should be looked at as a road map as we unify our party, bringing together Republicans and conservatives to stand against Democrats on June 20th", she said.
Trump had indeed seemed aware the election was as much about him as those in the fray, and had seemed engaged in a stream of tweets through the day on Tuesday as the district voted. Great job Karen Handel!
"We have defied the odds. shattered expectations", Ossoff said, and he urged his supporters to embrace the prospects of a runoff, telling them that they would "carry us to victory".

Trump also criticized the enthusiasm for Ossoff from people who don't live in Georgia's 6th congressional district.
"They ran to win last night and they lost", he said. Both of those counties went to Ossoff Tuesday night, 47.6 percent and 41.3 percent respectively, the New York Times reports.
Levell, who worked on Trump's campaign, got less than 1% of the vote.
"The racial demographics are a little bit different, and actually some of the income demographics", she says.
With a victory, Democrats would deliver a severe rebuke to President Donald Trump fewer than a hundred days into his presidency.
Had Mr Ossoff managed to get more than 50 per cent of the total, he would have won outright.
