United States President Donald Trump has ordered a review of the USA visa program for bringing high-skilled foreign workers into the country, mirroring the sentiment of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's move to abolish the 457 visa.
These forthcoming administrative and legislative measures will specially target the H-1B visa programme under which Indian technology companies bring thousands of computer professionals to the US every year. What does today's order actually do - and does it have teeth?
The order also calls for a crackdown on fraud and abuse in the current system of work visas - which the agencies had already signaled they would do.
These, he said, "are now awarded in a totally random lottery, and that's wrong".
"Everyone in my administration will be expected to enforce every last "Buy American" provision on behalf of the American worker, and we are going to investigate every single trade deal that undermines these provisions", he said.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order that is likely to end the H-1B lottery system from next year onwards.
Trump said Canada has been "very, very unfair" to dairy farmers and "we're going to start working on that".
"I applaud President Trump for his efforts to spur job creation, economic growth, and American competitiveness by improving our countrys high-skilled immigration programs, ? said House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte".
Such a change could affect companies, such as Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, Cognizant Tech Solutions Corp and Infosys Ltd, that connect USA technology companies with thousands of foreign engineers and programmers.
British pound jumps higher after election is called
It is an about-face from May's earlier statements about an early election, but it is hard to blame her for wanting to go early. There can be little doubt over why the Prime Minister has called a snap election despite repeatedly stating she would not.

The over/under total for the game is listed at 5.5 goals. "We've got to be more committed to play the game the right way". The Rangers managed just 21 shots on goal in Game 3 and had 21 giveaways, including 10 in the first period.
Britain's prime minister to seek early election on June 8
He was a weak supporter of the Remain campaign, and efforts by Labor legislators to unseat him have failed. May's governing Conservatives now have a slight majority, with 330 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons.
Employers, including Walt Disney World and the University of California, San Francisco, have laid off tech employees and replaced them with H-1B visa holders.
Such a change could affect major USA companies, such as Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, Cognizant Tech Solutions Corp and Infosys Ltd, that connect Silicon Valley with thousands of foreign engineers and programmers.
"It is important that companies and people look at the alternatives that are out there while being cognisant of the fact that this is pretty targeted at the displacement of American workers", he said. His businesses have also hired foreign workers, including at his Palm Beach, Florida, club.
Trump's visit to Wisconsin takes him to the congressional district of House Speaker Paul Ryan, who won't be joining the president because he's on a congressional trip visiting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries. R. Chandrashekhar, the president of the National Association of Software and Services Companies, a group that represents the Indian technology industry, says that more than three-quarters of the Fortune 500, America's largest companies by sales, use the Indian outsourcers for some operations.
The executive order also declares that American projects should be made with American goods.
Some studies suggest that universities grant technology degrees to more than enough American students to fill all the open jobs in the United States, so critics of the visas say the program is unnecessary.
Infosys, India's No. 2 IT services firm, has said previously that it is ramping up work on on-site development centres in the United States to train local talent in an effort to address the visa regulation changes under consideration.
Many in Congress support changing the H-1B lottery system to give preference to the highest-paying jobs. Instead, they should be given to the most skilled and highest-paid applicants, and they should never, ever be used to replace Americans.
Trump has traveled to promote his agenda less than his recent predecessors.
